The European Portfolio on Energy in International Development Cooperation: setting up an inventory and regular updating system (EPEIDC)

During the last decade, energy access, renewable energy, and energy efficiency have become top priorities in international development cooperation. The consensus on the crucial role of energy in poverty eradication has been strengthened by the adoption of the Seventh UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG7) that calls for universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy.
Over the last decade, the European Union has become the global leading donor in the field of energy and development cooperation and allocated a total amount of over € 3 billion to future actions on energy and development. The EU Member States are also major donors in sustainable energy.
The evolving institutional landscape in the field of energy and development cooperation, with many new initiatives, is characterized by a growing degree of complexity. Therefore, it is more crucial than ever for the EU to bundle its efforts and speak in a united voice on international level.

Project duration 01.05.2016 - 31.10.2016

This mapping exercise comes at a crucial time when the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide the new framework for international cooperation, and require all MSs and related institutions to work with a vision to achieve the 2030 SDGs. The compilation of a Portfolio Analysis of Energy Initiatives of the EC and its MSs could potentially form the basis for a concerted effort by the EC and its MSs to coordinate monitoring of the compounded European financial contribution to the achievement of SDG 7.

Specific objectives:

  1. Compile an overview of current efforts by the EC and the MSs in the field of energy
  2. Create a database of information of ongoing activities on energy in development cooperation of the EC and MSs.
  3. Establish a baseline analysis on which to build an information-gathering system of the EU’s (MSs, EC, etc.) financial contribution to achieving the SDG7 on energy.
