RLI presents at ATZ Conference „Grid Integration of E-Mobility”

June 2nd 2016 – The Reiner Lemoine Institut (RLI) participated in the 1st ATZ Conference Grid Integration of E-Mobility that took place in Berlin on May 31st and June 1st 2016. A delegation from the team “Mobility with Renewable Energy” presented results and methods from their field of research, focusing on the project Intelligent Mobility Station: Train station Bahnhof Berlin Suedkreuz.

For this project, the “train station of the future” of Deutsche Bahn has been equipped with renewable power generation units, batteries, and a car sharing station that are connected to form an intelligent Micro Smart Grid (MSG). The RLI stand at the conference featured a demonstrator for the project that was free for visitors to try.  RLI researchers presented the methods and simulation tools they developed to analyse and optimize the Micro Smart Grid.

Oliver Arnhold, head of the research group “Mobility with Renewable Energy ” at RLI, summarizes the conference results thusly: “When e-mobility becomes more popular and the number of registrations goes up, strong power peaks may occur in the electricity grid. Controlled charging will then become absolutely crucial.  Some car manufacturers are already working on quick charging systems, but these need to be integrated into the grid in an intelligent way. The question of decarbonizing vehicles remains unanswered, as does the question of how to integrate vehicles into the power grid. Hydrogen technologies are very promising in this context. The RLI has already developed simulation and analysis tools that can also be applied to hydrogen stations and electrolyzers.”

The ATZ Conference presents national and international state-of-the-art developments in e-mobility from the perspective of car manufacturers, energy suppliers, and data services. The conference focused on the subjects emission-free mobility, renewable power generation, and connected systems. You can find a detailed conference report here.
