Accelerating the growth of the hydrogen economy – hydrogen marketplace and cooperation platform for Berlin-Brandenburg opened

25.04.2022 Potsdam/Berlin. Brandenburg’s Minister of Economics Jörg Steinbach and Berlin’s Senator for Economics Stephan Schwarz today jointly presented the Berlin-Brandenburg Hydrogen Marketplace. The marketplace, developed on behalf of both states by the software company Localiser, is a central instrument for the expansion of the hydrogen economy in the capital region. It is now open to all stakeholders in the regional hydrogen economy and research.

The aim is to ensure a better overview of the hydrogen projects existing or planned in the region in order to enable synergies in further project development in the production, demand and consumption of hydrogen, as well as in infrastructure planning. The H2 marketplace is complemented by the cooperation platform Koop-BB of the Brandenburg Economic Development Board (WFBB), which enables networking and communication among the players. The “Hydrogen Economy Berlin-Brandenburg” group on the platform provides further information on hydrogen, the hydrogen marketplace and funding.

The joint hydrogen marketplace implements the agreement of the two states to cooperate closely in the development of the regional hydrogen economy, as contained in the Joint Strategic Framework for the Capital Region. It is part of the hydrogen roadmap for Brandenburg and the capital region and of Brandenburg’s hydrogen strategy.

Minister Steinbach: “The capital region is a strong energy region with considerable generation capacities and potential for renewable energies. Thus, the region has the best prerequisites for the emergence of a strong hydrogen economy. The hydrogen marketplace provides transparency and networking in this dynamic process and enables synergies between the players and our states.”

Senator Schwarz: “The joint hydrogen marketplace is another step on the way to making our energy supply more sustainable and independent. In this context, the initiative underscores the great potential that arises from the cooperation between Berlin and Brandenburg. The opportunities offered by hydrogen technology for regional energy supply, for the competitiveness of the energy industry and for the decarbonization of our energy region can best be exploited in a meaningful way by the two states working together. The more closely we coordinate our efforts, the more we think about the region together and intelligently combine its strengths, the better and more purposefully we can shape the energy transition. I am convinced that the future of energy supply – and not only this – will clearly be made in Berlin and Brandenburg.”

The spokeswoman of the Energy Technology Cluster Berlin-Brandenburg, Kathrin Goldammer, Managing Director of the Reiner Lemoine Institute, explained: “The new marketplace makes the potential of the hydrogen economy visible and quickly brings together players in the value chain. Such an instrument was missing until now and is unique in Germany. The more players there are, the more effective it will be. With several hundred players throughout eastern Germany, such a marketplace has great potential to accelerate the growth of the hydrogen economy.”

Suppliers and consumers of H2 products or services can present their projects on the marketplace and place concrete requests and bids or call up information available themselves, for example on H2 qualities, pressure or prices. The entries are shown georeferenced as a map. If a wind or solar park company produces green hydrogen, it can use the portal to get an overview of who has H2 needs in the transport sector, for example, and where the plants are located. Logistics and transport companies that need hydrogen can find suitable H2 offers or transport options there. Other application examples are in aviation and shipping, the mobility or heating sector, and gas storage.

Koop-BB complements the marketplace as a digital communication platform. It enables companies, municipalities, start-ups, scientific institutions and intermediaries to make their competencies, projects and ideas digitally visible. Users can obtain information there and establish contacts directly via dialog options. The platform uses intelligent matching processes to help users find partners, information and events that match their own profile or their own offers and requests. Online events can also be organized and held on the platform. Like the hydrogen marketplace, the service is free of charge. The Hydrogen Economy Berlin-Brandenburg group on the Koop-BB website is moderated by the Berlin-Brandenburg Energy Technology Cluster.

Localiser, a spin-off from the Reiner Lemoine Institute, is a software company for the automated construction of charging infrastructure for electromobility.
