RLI at Open Energy Modelling Workshop in Milan

October 28th 2016 –   Reiner Lemoine Institute has participated in the fifth workshop of the Open Energy Modelling Initiative (openmod) that took place in Milan on October 27th and 28th. Berit Müller, Ludwig Hülk, Birgit Schachler, and Catherina Cader went to Milan on behalf of RLI and chaired three sessions.

RLI is involved with many projects that promote more transparent research and exchange by applying open-source principles. At the openmod workshop in Milan, RLI presented results and concepts. Berit Müller presented the current status of the OpenEnergy platform, which is under development with support of the project open_eGo as well as the planned event in 2017 where the project REEEM will gather modeling groups working on EU transformation pathways to bundle efforts for the European Energy Transition. Her key message: If many people work together, a lot can be achieved. For RLI’s work this also means: If many developers work with a public database, a very good database concept is needed. Ludwig Hülk presented and discussed the Open Energy Database (oedb), which is a result of the project open_eGo.

In August 2016, the Open Data project open_FRED was started by RLI. open_FRED provides open datasets and models in which weather data and renewable energy time series are matched perfectly. In order to serve users‘ needs better and retrieve feedback from the participants, Birgit Schachler chaired two workshop sessions in Milan on water and wind power feed-in time series.

The openmod initiative, that was founded by modellers from various European research institutes and universities, meets twice a year. After workshops in Berlin, London, Stockholm, and now Milan, the next meeting will be hosted in Spring 2017 by another partner institution.
