E-mobility development and an “e-charging station concept” on the island of Usedom

In this project, the RLI together with its partners, analyzes the factors of e-mobility development on the island of Usedom. In doing so, the needs for charging locations and e-mobility on Usedom are determined and the impact of tourism on the island is analyzed. The RLI estimates the seasonal charging demand of the island in 2030 and develops proposals for an e-charging station concept on Usedom. Similar analyses take place at the same time by other project partners for the Polish island of Wollin.

With the "Interreg projects", the EU promotes international cooperation between EU member states and also neighboring non-EU member states. The Interreg project "MoRe" aims to gather experience in a German-Polish cooperation and to stimulate a consistent and international change in transport so that emissions from the transport sector are reduced.

Approach and methodology
The RLI describes the framework conditions on Usedom regarding sustainable transport and technical as well as legal developments. Together with partners, the RLI identifies local obstacles on Usedom that limit the expansion of sustainable mobility. Based on these results, future needs and suitable locations for charging infrastructure on Usedom are identified.

Fot the time of the project duration, German-Polish coordination meetings are held during the project to exchange the results of the projects on Usedom and the partner project on Wollin and to enable unified actions. Project duration: November 2021 – January 2022 The RLI explores the conversion of the energy supply to hybrid solutions. These sustainable energy supply solutions should be are reliable and resilient.

Core components of the feasibility study
The feasibility study first illuminates existing local conditions and analyzes the market. Local decision makers and stakeholders have a special role. They will be consulted and involved in the off-grid electrification project.

Energy demand surveys will be conducted by local project partners and based on these, the RLI will identify typical energy demand profiles for Daru. From this, it will be derived how a mini-grid can be technically designed to meet the requirements.

The analysis of the legal framework and financial expenditures as well as the development of an environmental and social management plan are also part of the feasibility study.

In the project, the RLI assumes the following tasks:
  • Presentation of the current framework conditions for alternative drives in the project context
  • Presentation of funding opportunities for alternative drives
  • Determination of demand for infrastructure for e-mobility
  • Conducting a survey on the local conditions and infrastructure needs
  • Analysis of two best practice projects
  • Development of recommendations for measures to promote alternative drive systems and the corresponding infrastructure
