Whether set up for battery charging in the garden of a single-family home or elaborately installed on a high-rise building: small wind turbines undoubtedly enjoy a high level of public attention. Numerous citizens in cities are looking for ways to supply themselves with wind power, at least proportionately.
Especially in settlement areas, the use of small wind power is accompanied by special opportunities and conflicts. For example, the good wind supply on tall buildings is countered by possible disruptive effects from the turbines.
The extensive range of topics of urban wind power was examined in the present research project at HTW Berlin, and the experiences and recommendations for action were summarised in a guideline. Both future users and licensing authorities are to be supported when it comes to the topics of site selection, technology, approval issues and economic viability in connection with small wind power projects in the settlement area.
