Hydrogen strategy for Chemnitz as a model region

July 26th, 2022 | Blueprint for building a regional, sustainable hydrogen economy: As part of a project group, the Reiner Lemoine Institute is working with Ingenieurgesellschaft Auto und Verkehr (IAV), the consulting firm consulting4drive and DBI Gas- und Umwelttechnik GmbH to develop a hydrogen strategy for the Chemnitz model region. The aim is to use H2 technology in the mobility and heating sectors and to support the transformation of Saxony’s automotive industry.

“Here, we will take the many ideas that already exist and design a functioning hydrogen economy that shapes infrastructure and logistics, drives sector coupling and strengthens independence from natural gas and other fossil fuels,” says Dr. Ingmar Hartung, Team Leader Hydrogen Infrastructure and Electrolysis at IAV.

Hydrogen is a key element for climate protection and thus also for creating value in the future. On behalf of the city of Chemnitz, which is supported by the hydrogen cluster HZwo e.V., the RLI and the three other partner organizations are developing a strategy for the future use of hydrogen in the region in the southwest of the Free State of Saxony by September 2023. The development into a hydrogen region is being funded by the German Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) as part of the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Program (NIP2) with a total of up to 400,000 euros. The funding directive is coordinated by NOW GmbH and implemented by Project Management Jülich (PtJ).

Mayor of the city of Chemnitz, Sven Schulze: “The city of Chemnitz is virtually predestined as a hydrogen technology region in national and international comparison. The numerous innovative handicraft enterprises located in Chemnitz, the excellent scientific landscape as well as the local politics and administration

underline this. Our aspiration is to bring together economic development and climate protection in order to provide security and prosperity for our region and the people who live and work here.”

The four partner organizations were awarded the consulting project in a call for tenders by the HyExpert model region (Chemnitz, as well as the districts of Zwickau, Mittelsachsen, Vogtland and Erzgebirge).
