A digital twin for the local heating market in Berlin

May 22, 2024 | Berlin is ready to tackle the challenges of climate change and take on a pioneering role in the use of renewable energies. A powerful team of energy market, heat market and digital experts will provide support. On behalf of the Berlin Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment, scientists from the Reiner Lemoine Institute will work with experts from Tagueri AG, con|energy consult and HYPERTEGRITY AG to design a digital twin of the Berlin heating market, a so-called digital heat register.

The heat register will be a detailed map of heat energy in the city, centralised and modernised in the Urban Data Space platform, which is also used at Berlin-Tegel Airport. The register will show where energy is being lost and where it can be utilised more efficiently. This will make it possible to take targeted measures to improve energy efficiency and link energy sources more efficiently with infrastructure data.

By signing the contract on 13 May 2024, the contractual partners laid the foundation for a comprehensive heat cadastre with a modern data hub as a central data management platform that integrates all relevant data from the local heating market and makes it analysable and visualisable for Berlin’s heat transition planning.

A key step for Berlin towards achieving climate neutrality and climate targets and a major step towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Here you find further information on the structure and content of the heat register (in German).
