Paul Bertheau takes over as Head of the Off-Grid Systems research department as a parental leave replacement for Philipp Blechinger

September 9, 2024 | Paul Bertheau will lead the RLI research unit Off-Grid Systems together with Catherina Cader from September 2024 and will stand in for the previous head of unit Philipp Blechinger during his parental leave.

Paul focuses particularly on sustainable energy access and decentralized renewable energy systems for islands. His PhD at the Europa-Universität Flensburg, titled “The role of renewable energy for low-carbon development on small Philippine Islands,” was conducted within this area of expertise.

He is an expert on the energy transition in an international context. In various projects, Paul promotes the development of research networks with partner institutions in Asia, Africa and America. Among other things, he is currently leading the GreenHyRECA project, in which RLI is working with partner organizations to establish a research network to investigate the potential of green hydrogen in Central Asia.

Paul has been part of RLI since 2012, starting as a student assistant before progressing to a doctoral student and researcher. Given that RLI was founded in 2010, he is one of the institute’s longest-serving team members.
