Life cycle analysis of large-scale batteries in the German balancing energy market (Bühler et al. 2015)

This paper deals with the analysis of economically viable applications of large-scale batteries on the German balancing energy market. A selection of suitable storage technologies was made and examined with a view to the current legal framework and the conditions of participation in the balancing power market. With regard to the maximum earning potential through the provision of primary balancing power, parameters on investment and operating costs, revenues, service lives and calculation interest were evaluated and evaluated.

The aim of the optimisation model, which is based on the life-cycle costs method, is to test the feasibility of a storage system on the primary balancing power market on the basis of existing profitability. Sensitivity analyses of various scenarios made it possible to illustrate that storage systems can already be used profitably on the balancing power market under certain conditions. In particular, lucrative and at the same time realistic scenarios were shown for the vanadium redox flow battery and the lithium-ion battery.
