Study on the evaluation of renewable energy projects

In this project, scientists from the Reiner Lemoine Institute are evaluating projects for the aid organization Misereor and the procurement and logistics organization BEGECA to promote renewable energies, energy-efficient technologies and decentralized energy supply in educational, health and social institutions in various countries in Africa and Asia. The aim of the evaluation is to systematically analyse measures for the promotion of renewable energies with regard to their effects, sustainability and efficiency.
Evaluation of renewable energy projects
In many rural regions of Africa and Asia, the energy supply is inadequate. At the same time, the consequences of climate change and energy costs are increasing. The funded projects therefore rely on the use of photovoltaic systems, energy-efficient technologies as well as training and institutional support. This is intended to enable partner organisations, such as Don Bosco, in the regions to implement their work in a long-term, economical and environmentally friendly manner.
The project team is investigating how effectively, efficiently and sustainably the measures have been implemented and what effects they have on the target groups. To this end, the experts analyze, for example, the technical performance, longevity of the installed systems, maintenance aspects, financing, institutional anchoring and local capacity expansion.
Analysis and evaluation
For the evaluation, the project team analyses documents and conducts interviews with the partner organisations and other key actors. In addition, the researchers conduct case studies in the three countries Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and India and summarize their findings and recommendations in a report.
