OpenPlan Stakeholder Workshop

18. November 2026, Online

As part of the OpenPlan 2.0 research project, RLI researchers are working with their project partners to continuously develop the OpenPlan tool for the implementation of municipal heating plans. At the upcoming stakeholder workshop, they will present the tool’s latest features and explain how to use them.

The workshop will take place on November 18, 2026, from 13.00 – 16.00 h and is aimed at anyone involved in municipal heating planning as well as the modeling and analysis of energy systems. In addition to presenting the new features, the event will provide an opportunity for questions, discussions, and knowledge sharing.

In addition to the RLI, Deutsche Gesellschat für Sonnenenergie, Fraunhofer IFAM, Energielenker, and Ökozentrum NRW are collaborating on the project.

The workshop will focus on the following topics:

  • Modeling heating networks in the OpenPlan tool
  • Additional use cases from municipal heat planning
  • Creating time series for consumption and generation
  • Introduction to oemof-eesyPlan

The new features will be presented using concrete examples and placed in the context of municipal heat planning. We aim to demonstrate how the OpenPlan tool can be used to analyze and plan future heat supply systems.

About OpenPlan

As part of the OpenPlan 1.0 project, a cross-sector, open planning tool was developed from January 2020 to June 2023. This tool is used for the optimized planning of energy systems to (partially) meet the electricity and heat needs of neighborhoods, commercial complexes, and industrial facilities in Germany.

The OpenPlan 2.0 project is further developing the OpenPlan tool for use in municipal heat planning. The project is funded under the 8th Energy Research Program in the “Technology-Oriented System Analysis” funding area of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
