Personal Information

Julian Fleischmann has been a researcher in the research unit Off-Grid Systems at RLI since November 2022. Before that, he was already working in the same unit as a guest researcher since May 2020. In his dissertation, he focuses on the Water-Energy-Food-Environment (WEFE) Nexus at a local scale and develops a digital assistant for integrated WEFE system planning. His work is supervised by Werner Platzer (Fraunhofer ISE, University of Freiburg), Lars Ribbe, Alexandra Nauditt (both ITT, TH Köln) and Philipp Blechinger (RLI). Within the research unit, he supports the integration of water and food systems into microgrids and the development of respective software tools.

Julian’s professional background includes positions in various research institutes in the energy sector as well as in the private sector. Among other things, he was a research assistant in the group “solar water treatment and separation” at Fraunhofer ISE and co-founder of the start-up project “wecogen”.

Julian received his master’s degree in Renewable Energy Engineering and Management from the University of Freiburg and his bachelor’s degree in Geography from Heidelberg University. His research focuses on ways to facilitate the planning of synergetic WEFE systems with open-source software.

Besides his work at RLI and doctoral project, he is a capoeirista, dancer, and nature lover. Julian speaks German, English, Spanish, and Portuguese fluently.
