Potentials for Compressed Air Energy Storage within the „Energiewende“
Project description
Energy storage concepts are necessary for realizing energy supply scenarios with high fractions of renewable energies. Besides the necessity of providing power for the stability of energy systems it becomes evermore important to store energy over a longer period. in this context the potential for compressed air energy storage was investigated. With this project the potential for Compressed Air Energy Storage is examined with regard to the integration of high fractions of renewable energies in the power grids. The main focus of the study is to analyse the availability of geological suitable areas for CAES and the techno-economic potential in a scenario with 100% renewable energy supply.
Project period: 01.12.2013 – 28.02.2014
Tasks
This study examines the value and role of CAES for an transition towards 100% renewable energy supply. Furthermore, an economic and technical comaprison of CAES and battery storage technologies is conducted.
