OpenPlan Stakeholder Workshop – Heat planning with the OpenPlan tool

29. October 2025, Online

As part of the OpenPlan 2.0 research project, the OpenPlan tool is being further developed for use in heat planning. The researchers will present newly developed functions in a workshop.
Paula Preuß, researcher in the research unit Off-Grid Systems, will take part in the workshop on behalf of RLI.
The workshop will focus on the following four areas:

• Presentation of the OpenPlan 2.0 project
• Integration of the OpenPlan tool into municipal heat planning
• Representation of heat networks in the OpenPlan tool
• Gathering feedback on the new features

Based on the feedback from the interactive workshop, the tool will be expanded with additional features and continuously improved. This approach ensures that the OpenPlan tool meets user requirements in the best possible way.

About OpenPlan:
As part of the OpenPlan 1.0 project, a cross-sector, open planning tool was developed between January 2020 and June 2023. This tool is used for the optimized planning of energy systems to (partially) supply the electricity and heating requirements of neighborhoods, commercial complexes, and industry in Germany.
The OpenPlan 2.0 project is further developing the OpenPlan tool for use in municipal heat planning. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy as part of the 7th Energy Research Program in the funding area of technology-oriented system analysis.
