GridHeating Compass

Project description

In this project, researchers at the Reiner Lemoine Institute investigate the effects of the heating transition on Germany’s power grids. The goal is to identify areas where grid expansion is needed to reliably meet rising electricity demand. This is particularly necessary due to the use of decentralized heat pumps in isolated supply areas. Through this project, the RLI is supporting municipalities and energy suppliers in addressing the challenges of an increasingly electricity-based heat supply.

Georeferenced data analysis and map visualization

The project team is compiling a comprehensive georeferenced dataset on service areas and integrating information on electricity, gas, and heating networks, as well as on the financial situation of the utilities. Using this data, the researchers are creating a map of Germany that highlights at a glance the areas facing particular challenges and systematically assesses expansion needs and financial conditions. On this basis, the RLI is creating a transparent decision-making framework for robust and socially responsible energy master planning.

Development of a Digital Analysis Tool

Another component of the project is the development of a digital tool for integrated energy master planning. The tool supports the implementation of the municipal heating transition. The tool is being tested in selected model regions.

Exchange and Knowledge Transfer

The project aims to foster exchange with relevant stakeholders by inviting representatives from politics, local governments, and energy utilities to workshops to discuss findings and further develop practical solutions. The project team seeks to advance knowledge transfer by providing guidelines and recommendations for action tailored to different types of energy utilities.

As part of the project, RLI researchers are collaborating with researchers from the think tank Agora Energiewende. They are also conducting the workshops jointly.

Project period: April 2026 – December 2027
