Project Report “BEST – Blockchain-based decentralized energy market design and management structures”
The project “BEST – Blockchain-based decentralized energy market design and management structures” develops and demonstrates components and strategies for regional energy markets that enable the trading of small-scale electricity volumes between decentralized generators and consumers. The goal is to market renewable electricity regionally, utilize flexibility potential to benefit the grid, and support energy utilities and energy communities in integrating decentralized energy resources. As part of the project, the modular BEST electricity trading system was developed, which connects local markets, forecasting methods, energy management systems, and digital trading mechanisms. The system accounts for time- and location-differentiated grid tariffs and integrates prosumers, suppliers, and distribution system operators into existing energy industry structures. Field tests confirmed the potential of the approach while also identifying key requirements for interoperability, metering infrastructure, and standardization.
