Small wind turbines, the approval situation in Germany and their use at educational institutions (Mueller et al. 2015)

As part of the UfU project “EE Schools” – evaluation of solar school projects and feasibility study wind energy at educational institutions, schools are supported in optimising their small wind turbine (KWEA) in terms of visibility and educational use.
The RLI is investigating the use of wind turbine in schools via a feasibility study. The feasibility study includes the technical and regulatory requirements as well as the practical conditions for site selection, the choice of the KWEA type and installation as well as the operation of the plant. Furthermore, the profitability of KWEA is considered.
Through the cooperation with two upper school centres, a leisure centre as an extracurricular place of learning in Berlin and a grammar school in Saxony, as well as further telephone interviews with schools that already have their own facility, helpful experiences were gained and prepared for future KWEA projects by schools.
