CP Nigeria

CP Nigeria – Toolbox for Designing Mini-Grid Implementation Plans.

What does CP Nigeria help with?

The CP Nigeria toolbox, developed by researchers at RLI, helps representatives of unelectrified communities in Nigeria design mini-grid implementation plans. The tool facilitates the modeling of electricity demand, the design of suitable mini-grid systems, and the execution of financial analyses to create a comprehensive document for engaging stakeholders.

Who is the tool suitable for?

CP Nigeria is intended for representatives of unelectrified communities in Nigeria, as well as non-profit organizations supporting these communities. It is designed for use by non-experts who are interested in promoting electrification solutions in Nigeria.

How does CP Nigeria work?

The tool provides a graphical user interface that allows users to simulate a simple energy system. Components such as diesel generators, PV modules, and battery storage can be selected and integrated into a mini-grid system. Based on typical load profiles published in the PeopleSun project, the community’s energy demand can be manually created. The CP Nigeria tool generates an implementation plan that includes details of the mini-grid system and an initial financial analysis for the project’s lifecycle. This document can be used to engage stakeholders and request funding from local energy authorities.

What are some examples of its use?

The tool was developed as part of the project “Communities of Practice as Drivers of a Bottom-Up Energy Transition in Nigeria.” It was used to create implementation plans for five rural communities in Nigeria. These plans were presented to various stakeholders, including project developers, funding institutions, and policymakers, who could advance electrification projects in these communities.

How is CP Nigeria accessible?

The tool was developed using the open-source web framework Django and is fully available under the MIT open-source license on the online platform GitHub. The application is hosted at https://community-minigrid.ng/.
