Cellular energy systems can help to advance the energy transition faster and more cost-effectively, while at the same time increasing security of supply. As part of the Berlin Energy Days, the German Solar Energy Society (DGS) will be holding an event on this topic on May 6 entitled “Cellular energy systems – How a cost-optimized, sustainable and secure energy supply can be realized in practice”. During the event the basics of cellular energy systems will be taught and various examples for the implementation will be presented.

Caroline Möller, research associate in the research unit Off-Grid Systems at RLI, will present the planning of cellular energy systems with the open-plan-tool. The digital event will take place on May 6 between 3:30 and 5 pm. In the open_plan project, the RLI is developing a user-friendly tool with a graphical interface. This can be used directly by different stakeholders for the optimized planning of energy cells for the (partial) supply of electricity and heat demand of neighborhoods, commercial buildings and industry in Germany and beyond.

With the structuring of the energy system into energy cells, which are organized in a subsidiary manner, energy is primarily generated where it is also consumed. However, energy and system services can also be exchanged or traded across cells. In the event of grid failures, the cells can also increase the system stability and resilience of the overall system.

This event will include keynote presentations, to which the DGS invited representatives from the “Cellular Energy Systems” expert committee of the German Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE) and of the research project open_plan.

The Berlin Energy Days will take place from May 2-6 using the motto “Energiewende MACHEN – gemeinsam!”
