Feasibility study H2 start network Brandenburg

Project description

On behalf of the Brandenburg Ministry of Economic Affairs, Employment and Energy (MWAE), the RLI is working together with partner organizations on a feasibility study for the establishment and expansion of an efficient transport network for hydrogen in Brandenburg.

Demand-oriented network for sustainable transport of hydrogen

Brandenburg is a national leader in renewable energy generation per capita. Since October 2021, the state has adopted its own hydrogen strategy , whose concrete measures also concern the transport network. The RLI has played a major role in this strategy. With the feasibility study, the MWAE is now promoting the development of a supraregional transport network for hydrogen. It is intended to connect actors who produce and store hydrogen with end users via an economically viable route. To this end, the RLI researchers are determining the potential and requirements for hydrogen transport in Brandenburg. Together with the project partners from the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy (IEG) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI), the RLI is responsible for the scientific support of the study. Infracon, a gas pipeline network operation company, will use the results to develop a concrete proposal for the routing.

Broad participation in implementation

In the implementation of the project, participation instruments will help to involve all relevant stakeholders in the hydrogen economy from the very beginning. For this purpose, in addition to the use of the hydrogen marketplace as a digital platform, the survey of focus groups and of network operators is planned.

Project period: April 2022 – December 2022

Tasks

  • Identification of RE sources for hydrogen production
  • Identification of local hydrogen demand and storage opportunities
  • Stakeholder workshops
