Editha Kötter supports the “Citizen Assembly On Climate” as a fact checker
May 31, 2021 | Editha Kötter, Head of the RLI Research Unit Transformation of Energy Systems is supporting the “The Citizen Assembly On Climate” in its 8th meeting on June 5, 2021 as a fact checker.
She is supporting the Citizen Assembly as an expert to develop recommendations on how Germany can achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. These will be handed over to all parties in the German Bundestag in the form of an expert report after the national elections in September 2021.
Societal participation for the energy transition.
In the first national Citizen Assembly on German climate policy, around 160 people from all over Germany selected by lot discuss the challenges in climate policy. Their proposals to policymakers are to take into account ecological as well as social and economic aspects. The Citizen Assembly will meet in twelve online sessions between April 26 and June 23, 2021, and is supported by experts from politics, science, and civil society.
Four fields of action: Energy, mobility, buildings & heat, food
The fact checkers are experts on the topics of the Citizen Assembly and have the task of answering members’ questions during the meetings and evaluating their proposed recommendations in terms of their effectiveness. Editha is taking on this role in the 8th session for the energy field of action together with Barbara Saerbeck from the think tank Agora Energiewende.
The Citizen Assembly was initiated and commissioned by BürgerBegehren Klimaschutz e.V., and the three institutes ifok, nexus and IPG are responsible for its organization. The patron of the Citizens’ Council is former German President Horst Köhler.
The meetings are not open to the public, but some are available as recordings afterwards.
