HyExpert Chemnitz: Feasibility Study Hydrogen Strategy for the Model Region Chemnitz
Project description
On behalf of the city of Chemnitz, the Reiner Lemoine Institute is working with partner organizations in a feasibility study to develop a hydrogen strategy for the Chemnitz model region. The focus of the project is on the area of mobility. The goals are to show potentials for the use of H2 technology in the mobility and heating sector as well as to support the transformation of the Saxon automotive industry.
Showing potential for the production and use of hydrogen
Hydrogen is a building block for a sustainable energy supply with renewable energies. It is becoming increasingly important. For this project, the regional potentials regarding the production and use of hydrogen shall be quantified and evaluated according to techno-economic methods. Furthermore, the implementation of first hydrogen islands shall be planned. In this way, the hydrogen economy can be ramped up in stages and its individual components can be coordinated with each other. In the mobility sector, the project team is primarily looking at local public transport (LPT), heavy-duty transport, H2-powered special vehicles, for example for waste disposal or agriculture, and motorized private transport. As a result, the project team is designing a producer-consumer scenario for the Chemnitz region and is developing measures for the distribution of infrastructure and the activation of market players. On this basis, the scientists develop strategic recommendations for the development of a regional hydrogen economy.
Inlcusion of Localiser software
To achieve the project goals, the team is using the software of the RLI spin-off Localiser. It will be used to create an interactive map. This will provide easy access to relevant information about hydrogen production and consumption, as well as other infrastructure elements along the entire value chain in this area. In addition, the platform can be used to invite relevant stakeholders to interactively exchange information and transfer knowledge.
HyExpert Chemnitz Region
The Chemnitz region is one of the winning regions of the second phase of the HyLand competition of the German Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV). The development into a hydrogen region is funded by the BMDV within the framework of the National Innovation Program Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP2) with a total of up to 400,000 euros. The funding directive is coordinated by NOW GmbH and implemented by Project Management Jülich (PtJ).
Project period: May 2022 – August 2023
