Innovative fuels for low-emission aviation (ITEAL)
Project description
The ITEAL-project (Innovative fuels for low-emission aviation) is about alternative fuels in aviation. Together with the project partners Straußberg Airport, Schönhagen Airport, aviasim, Aviation Fuel Projects Consulting, Comworxx, IKEM, PtX Solutions, Berlin Brandenburg Aerospace Alliance e.V., EASC and the associated partner Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), RLI prepares a feasibility study.
The content: How and at what conditions can innovative, environmentally and climate-friendly fuel be produced as an alternative to fossil kerosene at the regional airports in Straußberg and Schönhagen? Both airports plan to add photovoltaic systems on their airport grounds. The electricity generated by solarpower can be used to produce innovative fuels – in this case green hydrogen and power-to-liquid fuel, i.e. synthetic kerosene.
PtL-plant as a role model
Based on this project, the feasibility study examines the technical, economic, regulatory, political and social framework conditions for the production of these innovative fuels on airport premises. The study also shows the purposes for which the fuel produced can and should be used.
The study’s investigation has a pioneering character – it paves the way for the use of further decentralized plants for the generation of PtL synthesis at other regional airports in Germany and abroad.
Porject duration: October 2021 – January 2022
Tasks
- Estimation of the potentials of hydrogen production at the airports Straußberg and Schönhagen with the RLI simulation tool SMOOTH
- Estimation of the potentials of PtL production at Straußberg and Schönhagen airports with the RLI simulation tool SMOOTH
- Analysis of the influence of charges, surcharges and taxes on the costs for the provision of synthetic fuels
