Preconditioning of electric vehicles to increase range (Nerling et al. 2016)

Jannes Nerling, Florian Schaller, Oliver Arnhold

The limited range of electric vehicles is further reduced by the air conditioning of the passenger cell. Due to the high effective thermal storage capacity of the vehicle masses, the energy requirement for heating and cooling processes of the passenger cell is relatively high.

Therefore, a simulation model was developed at the Reiner Lemoine Institute that quantifies the potential of thermal preconditioning of the passenger cell to increase range.
