Power Grids

Power grids form the backbone of energy supply in the wake of the Energy Transition. Transmission grids must be adapted to new generation structures, distribution grids need adaptations in order to integrate renewable energy plants and to meet the changed operating conditions.

We specialize in investigations of planning and operating electricity grids and in particular distribution grids. The focus here is on the grid integration of renewable energy and the grid-compatible use of energy storage systems.

Building on open-source tools, some of which we have developed ourselves, we conduct studies, develop tailor-made tools for special investigations, and advise on specific issues.

Example projects

open_eGo: open electricity grid optimization

Development of a holistic grid planning tool as an integral part of an open energy modelling platform aiming at the determination of an optimal grid and storage expansion in Germany. The project open_ego aims at developing a transparent, inter-grid-level operating grid planning tool to investigate economically viable grid expansion scenarios, considering alternative flexibility options such as storages or redispatch.
