Intern and guest researcher

Info

Lucy Corthell has been an intern at the RLS Graduate School and a guest researcher in the research unit Off-Grid Systems at RLI since May 2024. In the RLS Graduate School, Lucy supports Martha Hoffmann in her dissertation regarding justice in the energy transition. For this, Lucy is working on the intersection of heat and public health in Berlin, and will investigate the distribution of burdens on the population. Parallel to that, she is also gaining insight into project work with the Off-Grid team, specifically supporting the projects CURE and PeopleSuN.

Lucy has previously conducted summer research at the National Renewable Energy laboratory on deep uncertainty within NREL flagship tools to help ensure long-term durability of the United States’s green energy transition plans in alignment with the US’s goal of clean energy by 2035. Lucy has also interned at the American Physical Society analyzing US Census data consisting of degrees granted across race and gender demographics to analyze gaps and suggest areas for further research with the end goal of making physics and other STEM fields more inclusive and equitable spaces. She hopes to continue research at the PhD level within the intersection of sustainability, energy equity, and green energy.

She is enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program majoring in Physics and Earth and Environmental Engineering at Columbia University. Apart from her work at RLI, she works in the Dr. Steingart energy storage lab at Columbia University and also enjoys volunteering as a ski instructor in her home city of Seattle, Washington.
