H2 SEA – Regional trade dynamic study of green hydrogen and derivative products in SEA region

In this project, RLI scientists are developing a market potential study for the use of green hydrogen in ten Southeast Asian countries.

Green hydrogen - a key element for a renewable energy system

Energy demand is rising rapidly in Southeast Asia. The use of green hydrogen plays an important role in meeting this demand while at the same time achieving the transition to a fully renewable energy system and the decarbonization of industry and the mobility sector. It is produced using renewable energy.

The study covers the countries of Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Brunei. For a sustainable integration of green hydrogen into the energy systems of the different countries, it is important to consider available resources and infrastructures, political framework conditions as well as economic and environmental impacts. The project team will conduct interviews, workshops and training sessions on these topics with various stakeholders from the region. The scientists will provide information on green hydrogen and its potential importance for the region, while the representatives from the countries will provide information on the needs and structures in their countries.

Involvement of local stakeholders

An important part of the project is the involvement of local interest groups. Through stakeholder interviews and participant feedback, country-specific data is collected for the potential study. The involvement of local groups helps to determine the need for information for decisions in the green hydrogen sector. The results of the study should help with the expansion of the hydrogen sector and future renewable energy projects as well as support political decision-makers in their work.

Project duration: November 2023 - March 2024

The RLI fulfills the following tasks in the project:

  • Preparation of input for knowledge sessions with stakeholders and facilitation of stakeholder participation
  • Conduction of expert interviews to close data and knowledge gaps and get in depth views from stakeholders in the region
  • Writing of a final report synthesizing the insights gathered by literature review, knowledge sessions and stakeholder interviews
  • Presentation of the findings and dissemination workshop
