Global island overview to identify market regions for renewable technologies.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Within this study the attractiveness for renewable energy systems on islands is investigated for ABB.

The overall goal of the study is to create a ranking of the economically most attractive islands, thus establishing a lead-list for a systematic market entry by ABB. It is focused on either the implementation of solar power or wind power without considering energy storage solutions.

For this study and island database developed at the RLI is applied which comprises data on more than 80,000 geo-referenced islands worldwide. This database was derived by GIS simulations combining different data sets about geography, population and renewable resources. Finally, the combination of valuable datasets allows for deriving the market potential for renewable energies.

Project period: 01.11.2014 - 31.01.2015

The results of the simulation combined with additional information for each island are enabling ABB to pick out the most interesting islands for detailed analyses.
