Filling up with electricity from street lamps: Start for charging stations in Berlin

July 15^th, 2022 | Filling up with electricity at street lamps is now possible in Berlin: Berlin State Secretary for Mobility Dr. Meike Niedbal from the Senate Department for the Environment, Mobility, Consumer and Climate Protection, project partners, and the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district office of Berlin put the first lamppost charging points into operation in the Berlin Biesdorf on July 13, 2022. This marked the beginning of the installation of 200 new charging points of the Berlin pilot project as part of the research project “ElMobileBerlin” in Marzahn-Hellersdorf and Steglitz-Zehlendorf. As part of this project, RLI is investigating whether the improvement of the charging infrastructure actually has an effect on air quality and is conducting regular air measurements.

In the coming weeks, more light poles will follow in both districts, which will be equipped with charging facilities. The “Heinz” lamppost charging point developed by Ubitricity and Ebee Bender Solutions with a charging capacity of 3.7 kW and a Type 2 plug-in connection will be used. Users can use the lantern charging points with their charging cables and the usual rates of their own mobility service provider (contract-based charging) or via a QR code on the charging equipment for spontaneous charging (without a contract).

The ElMobileBerlin project

The ElMobileBerlin project aims to contribute to improving Berlin’s urban air. By installing charging points for e-mobility, the aim is to create incentives for car owners to switch from conventional vehicles with high emissions to e-vehicles. The charging points will be integrated into street lamps and underground parking garages.

Carolin Daam and Romy Seiler, researcher in the unit Mobility with Renewable Energies at RLI, are working on the project.
